Desolation

For a teenager in the 1980s in Santa Cruz, finding a place to drink where the police weren't going to bust you was a top priority, and for a gang of scrawny traditional skinheads hiding from much larger and older boneheads, it was a must. Over the years, we had many, the Keep, the Nook, Harvey West Graveyard, Peach Hill, but our number one spot and down was Desolation. Acres of mostly abandoned train yards nestled between Neary Lagoon, the Sewage Treatment Plant, and Downtown, this was our playground. Many a cold night was spent quaffing 40ozers of malt liquor while singing along to the Pogues playing on a cheap ghetto blaster. Named by Joel years earlier (after the scorched postapocalyptic land in the Road Warrior) it's still called that by locals today. As you'd expect it's been in our graphichic novels more than once as well as James's Nineteen 87 solo project. Here's two great pages created by him and Dannyboy...
